I used to cry the second my mom left my side. Yes, I was a
momma's boy and a very shy and scared one at that.
It was a huge fear of mine to be in front of people.
So I'm on your side. I totally get how awkward and uncomfortable it

I used to stutter a bit, and be afraid to speak up for myself
and even raise my hand when I was growing up because I felt
that I was gonna be mocked, ridiculed and laughed at.
SO believe me, I get the whole being weird and unnatural
in front of a camera.

Hi there. I'm Shiggy, it's super nice meeting you. Family photos can be tough. It's hard wrangling the kids and getting them to smile and to look at the lens of the camera. I totally get it. It's hard, but it's totally worth it. I bet your parents, just like my folks, had to do their best to get everyone ready for the family photo shoot, but in the end, stressed out over the family photos, but, looking, you have the photos and it becomes part of your history, your nostalgia, your childhood memories.
The photos act as a bridge to a past memory. The photos connect our present to a time long ago. Just imagine if you had zero photos of you growing up from say the time you were born until age 10. Photos help connect the dots. Photos can punctuate certain time periods in your life.
Perhaps it's my goofy nature, silly expressions or big eyes, but children often look at me and somehow I can make 'em laugh. heheee! I think it was my experience of being a school teacher for over 10 years and getting the children's attention, that helps bring their focus to the focus of the lens!
I've been known to make funny noises and even squeak to get the little one's eyes to look at the camera. The kids aren't the only ones having FUN! Anything to make pretty pictures and see happy smiles and happy eyes.

QUICK STORY TIME
My German mother and Japanese father both immigrated to the US in the late 1960's. They were one of THE first "interracial" couples who were allowed to marry legally. What do you mean by legally?
It was illegal for interracial couples to marry in
all of the United States prior to 1967.
You could be married in say Washington D.C. but it wouldn't be
recognized in other States.
Richard Loving (gotta love his last name) and his wife Mildred Jeter exchanged wedding vows in Washington, D.C., in June 1958 where interracial marriage was legal. They returned home to Virginia shortly after.
Just 5 weeks after their wedding at about 2:00 a.m. they were arrested for violating Virginia's anti-miscegenation law, which deemed interracial marriage a felony! Their prison sentence was suspended under the condition that they would leave Virginia and not return together for a period of 25 years. They couple left and lived in exile in the nation's capital but longed to return back to their hometown.
Loving v. Virginia, was a landmark civil rights decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that laws banning interracial marriage violate the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
On June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court issued a unanimous 9–0 decision in favor of the Lovings that overturned their criminal convictions and struck down Virginia's anti-miscegenation law.
The following year after the Supreme Court struck down the state laws banning interracial marriage in the United States in 1967, my parents were married, on March 1968 in Boston, MA. I always admire my mom for being one of the first and being a pioneer in her own right.
Nowadays blended families are the norm.
My sister and I were starred at a lot, especially in Japan, with a Caucasian woman pushing the pram with two Asian looking kids. My mom got stopped quite frequently in Kobe by random strangers who wanted to take our photo. It was certainly a novelty to see a Caucasian lady in Japan in the 1970s, let alone with two children with an Asian father.
In the late 70s in the US and in England where we lived, people often
thought my mother was the nanny or the help.
